Towel Crafting Process

1. Materials

We use GOTS-certified yarns in all our products. GOTS is the international standard for organic cotton certification. Our organic cotton is primarily sourced from Tanzania, along with Pima cotton from Peru, Giza cotton from Egypt, and naturally colored brown cotton from Peru.

2. Yarn Processing

Freshly picked cotton is naturally coated with an oil film that must be removed through scouring to make it absorbent. While many towel manufacturers use caustic soda and bleach for this process, we use soda ash—a substance also used in food production—for all our products. To control lint, we apply starch paste, another ingredient commonly found in food products.

3. Weaving

We use shuttle looms that have been in operation for over 50 years as part of our weaving process. Fabrics woven at about a quarter of the speed of the fastest modern looms are infused with air, giving them a soft texture.

4. Post-Processing

After weaving, our fabrics undergo post-processing, which includes enzymatic desizing and soap-based soaping, followed by drying to complete the process. Additional post-processing steps in towel manufacturing include shearing (cutting the pile loops) and piece-dyeing with reactive dyes, primarily used for colored towels.

Some towel manufacturers rely on softening agents and penetrating agents in their additional processes. Fabrics that have been treated with caustic soda during refining to enhance water absorption will typically have a stiff finish. To soften the fabric, softening agents are used, with penetrating agents also applied to ensure water absorption. This common practice not only increases environmental impact but also makes the towels unsuitable for people with skin sensitivities.

5. Sewing

We manufacture our towel products entirely in Japan, from weaving to finishing, with clear traceability, ensuring both environmental responsibility and safety.
